An Update from the Art Room!

ART UPDATE! We have been having so much fun in the art room at Maywood Fine Arts! Here’s what we have been up to over the past several weeks:

4-6 year olds:  The 4-6 year olds learned about primary and secondary colors on the color wheel by mixing play-doh and paint. We read the story ‘Mouse Paint” and made mice using collage techniques. Then we learned about the artist Mondrian and horizontal/vertical lines. We started some clay pinch pots to paint later and created a painting with shapes, textures, and warm/cool colors.

7-9 Year Olds: The 7-9 year olds started the year with an overview of color and created their own color wheels with primary, secondary, and tertiary colors. We completed two projects inspired by Vincent Van Gogh- a Sunflower still-life and Starry Night landscape collage.  We learned about the art of Papel Picado, a traditional form of art in Mexico, and made our own to hang in the room. We also learned about the history of Ojos de Dios and started a yarn-weaving project.

10-13 Year-olds: The 10-13 year-olds reviewed the color wheel and learned about tints, tones, and shades. We mixed paint to create our own color wheels. Then we created a collage incorporating color mixing theory with watercolors and patterns/shapes. We also created Papel Picado to hang in our art room. Then we learned about Picasso and started a portrait cardboard-relief project inspired by the Cubism art movement. We used a printmaking technique with bubble wrap that was a lot of fun!

There’s always so much going on in the art room! We would love to invite children ages 4 and up to join us! Classes are on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Check out https://maywoodfinearts.org/ for more info about signing up! It’s only $50 for a seven-week session.

Also, we had an amazing turnout on the day of the Pumpkin Patch!! Thank you to everyone who helped us paint rocks for our river rock garden! They look beautiful displayed outside of the Stairway to the Stars building!
