Sleeping Beauty Ballet
This year, MFA’s Classical Ballet for New Audiences (CBNA) program presented Sleeping Beauty. The cast featured 5 remarkable guest artists and over 100 Stairway of the Stars ballet students!
Held at the Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church on March 6th for School Field Trips at 10am and a sold-out Public Show at 7pm.
Tchaikovsky’s beloved ballet has been a staple of professional ballet corps. It was first performed in 1890 and has remained popular due to its timeless and powerful message of LOVE!

Act 1: Princess Aurora’s baptism celebration
The Queen is celebrating the birth of her daughter, Princess Aurora. Five Fairies dance in celebration and give Aurora a special gift. Before the Lilac Fairy can present her gift, the evil fairy, Carabosse, interrupts the party. She is angry because she wasn’t invited. Carabosse curses Princess Aurora. She tells the Queen that when Aurora is sixteen years old, she will prick her finger on a needle and die. The Queen and her court are afraid, but the Lilac Fairy promises to protect the princess. Aurora and her court will sleep for one hundred years. After one hundred years have passed, Aurora will be awakened by a prince’s kiss.
Act 2: Princess Aurora’s sixteenth birthday party
It is Aurora’s sixteenth birthday and the Queen is having a big party for her. The wicked fairy Carabosse sneaks into the party in disguise. She hands a bouquet of flowers to Aurora. Aurora does not realize that a needle is hidden inside the bouquet. Aurora pricks her finger and falls to the ground. The Lilac Fairy appears and casts her spell. She puts the entire court to sleep.
Act 3: Sleeping Beauty is Awakened
One hundred years pass, the Lilac Fairy leads Prince Desiré to the sleeping kingdom. But Carabosse is waiting for them. Prince Desiré and Carabosse fight, and Prince Desiré wins. Carabosse is sent away forever. Prince Desiré finds Aurora and wakes her up with a kiss. He has broken Carabosse’s curse! The entire Kingdom gathers to celebrate the wedding of Aurora and Desiré. Fairytale characters dance at the party. everyone lives happily ever after!
